Metric Conversion Tips

Most people in the United States are quite happy and comfortable with using imperial units for measurement. In case you didn’t know, that is using inches and feet. However, more and more companies are switching beverage contents to the metric system. Product descriptions are beginning to show sizes in millimeters as opposed to inches.

The average American is often confused by these changes. Most of us have the mentalities that “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it”. Now, we live in a global society where we buy things from all over the world usually via the internet. If you don’t know how to do the conversions, these metric conversion tips should help you manage better.

Labtool.com is happy to provide the following quick guide to help with your metric conversions:

• Changing Liters to Gallons and Quarts
The liter and the quart are almost the same. A quart has approximately one quarter cup less fluid than a liter. Two liters is roughly half a gallon and four liters is around one gallon.
One gallon is 3.785 Liters.

• Switching ML and CC to Teaspoons and Tablespoons
ML’s are milliliters and CC’s are cubic centimeters. ML’s are usually associated with recipes while CC’s are most often used to describe an amount for a dosage of medication. ML’s and CC’s are exactly equal. One ML is the same as one CC. That’s the simple part to remember.

There are five ML’s in one teaspoon. One tablespoon consists of fifteen ML’s. Converting to cups is not easy and will rarely be exact. 300 ML’s are the same as one and one quarter cups. You can double and triple from there but that is the starting base for precise conversion from ML’s to cups. One liter is equivalent to one thousand ML’s.

One ounce is 29.57 ML.

One gallon is 3.785 liters.
• Converting Kilos to Pounds
Kilo is the shortened word for kilograms. Half of a kilo is around one pound but not the exact conversion. One kilogram is exactly 2.2 pounds.
Everyone that watches the news has heard stories about major drug busts. When the reporters tell us that one hundred kilos of marijuana was seized, we now know that it means two hundred twenty pounds.
One ounce is 28.35 grams.
One pound is .454 kilograms.
One ton is .907 mega grams.
• Changing MMs to Inches
MMs are millimeters. Three MMs are one eighth of an inch so six MMs are one quarter of an inch.
One full inch is 25.4 MMs.
One foot is .305 meters. (m)
One yard is .914 meters. (m)
One mile is 1.61 kilometers (km).
• When All Else Fails, Google It
If you still can’t grasp the conversion concepts, don’t sweat it. Many of us have gone happily through our lives without memorizing the metric system and frankly, have no plans of doing so now. There is a simple solution for those people. Just Google it!
There are numerous conversion calculators available on the internet. They are easy to use and give you the exact conversion in a matter of seconds. Any of these calculators will do the job for you. It’s great because you will not have to do the math yourself.
Some of the conversions are easy to remember such as one ML is the same as one CC. Or that five ML is one teaspoon. It’s pretty simple stuff. The more difficult ones will probably never stick in our heads without spending hours studying and memorizing them. That’s why the conversion calculators are the best solution for any metric conversion problem.
